Sontonga Mall is one of 18 shopping centres in the Futuregrowth Community Property Fund, which acquires and expands new and existing shopping centres in rural areas and townships throughout South Africa.
Each shopping centre is a catalyst for the development of municipal infrastructure in the area and the enhancement of transport infrastructure.The community surrounding the Fund’s shopping centres benefits from increased access to a wide range of quality shopping facilities and commercial services as well as employment opportunities
Sontonga Mall’s vivacious centre manager, Anne Dire, is a great example of this. Anne was born in Eldorado Park and still resides there today with her three children. At an early age, her father inspired her to learn an African language and as result she taught herself a basic level of isiZulu which she uses daily both professionally and personally.
Anne has been in the retail environment for over 23 years. Her career started with Ellerines Holdings as a sales advisor for Ellerines. She was a top performer and was promoted to regional sales manager. At the time, she was the first female in the company to be appointed to this position.
Anne left Ellerines after ten years and joined Lewis Stores where she worked as a branch manager.
In 2009, Anne was looking for a new challenge and applied for the role of centre manager at Sontonga Mall. Eager to further her skillset, Anne networked with peers in centre management roles, and enrolled herself in various short courses which covered topics such as health and safety, and risk management.
In 2015, Capital Land Property Management was appointed by Futuregrowth as the property manager for Sontonga Mall, and reappointed Anne as Sontonga Mall’s centre manager.
Anne’s current responsibilities include daily centre inspections, administration associated with property management, facilitation of repairs and maintenance and tenant liaison and queries.
Respect for others is of utmost importance for Anne and she treats all individuals accordingly. She believes that, in turn, this approach has earned her respect from the community. Anne is well known in the Katlehong community and takes great pleasure in being able to give back to the community through Sontonga Mall’s social responsibility initiatives.
Properties are selected for their potential for strong income growth. The Fund performed extremely well for the second year running, delivering 24.3% for the 12-month period ending December 2016, compared to SA’s listed property sector’s return of 10.20% for the same period.
